HKIBIM Silver Award for ND/2024/07-Development of Fanling North New Development Area

We are proud to announce that our collaborative efforts on the Fanling North New Development Area (Remaining Phase – Design and Construction, East) have been recognized with a Silver Award at the HKBIM Awards 2025.

Working alongside the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), AtkinsRéalis, and Build King, SBI played a pivotal role in delivering a vendor-neutral information management workflow for one of Hong Kong’s most critical infrastructure expansions.

From Standards to Solutions: Integrating openBIM & openGIS

This award-winning project builds on SBI’s long-standing collaboration with Lands Department (LandsD). Leveraging the foundation of our 2022 buildingSMART International award-winning submission — “bSI Information Delivery Specification (IDS) for an integrated openBIM® and openGIS Platform” — the Fanling North project successfully translated theoretical standards into a practical, high-stakes workflow.

By connecting General Building Plan (GBDR) and Underground Utility Information System (UUIS) requirements, the team created a structured, lifecycle-ready data environment.

Technical Innovation: Automation via Blender Bonsai

To meet the rigorous data harmonization needs of the Fanling North development, SBI utilized a specialized suite of openBIM tools. A key highlight of the technical strategy included:

  • Automated Data Injection: Using Blender Bonsai, SBI automated the injection of GIS attributes into the BIM environment.

  • Risk Mitigation: This integration solved the industry-wide challenge of UUIS synchronization, significantly reducing risks associated with underground utility management.

  • Policy Alignment: The workflow fully supports CEDD’s commitment to the Development Bureau’s (DEVB) BIM policies, ensuring deliverables are optimized for Hong Kong’s future smart city infrastructure.

A Vision for Reliable Asset Management

The Silver Award honors more than just technical execution; it recognizes a shift toward more reliable asset and utility management. The result is a digital legacy that supports coordinated delivery today and smarter maintenance for decades to come.

About the HKIBIM Awards

About the Awards The HKIBIM Award is one of the most prestigious awards in Architecture, Engineering and Construction sectors. It aims to acknowledge and recognize the outstanding achievement of Organizations, Projects, Teams and Individuals who actively adopt and utilize Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology.

BIM has revolutionized the construction industry by allowing for more efficient and effective planning, design, construction, and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure. BIM professionals play a crucial role in this process, leveraging their specialized skills and expertise in BIM software and technologies to develop and manage digital models of construction projects.

This year’s theme, “BIM Beyond Boundaries”, celebrates how Building Information Modelling transcends boundaries to transform global construction. The theme highlights Hong Kong’s role as both Asia’s world city and a BIM innovation hub, where international talents converge with local expertise through initiatives. By breaking down geographical and technical barriers, we foster cross-border collaboration and shared digital innovation across the Greater Bay Area, creating smarter, more connected built environments worldwide while positioning Hong Kong as the vital link between Mainland and international BIM practices.
