Co-developing an award-winning, vendor-neutral openBIM Quality Platform that makes advanced QAQC accessible to every contractor in Hong Kong — including SMEs.

Built on open standards and designed for real-world construction workflows, the openBIM Quality Platform won the Grand Award in the Technology Category at the Hong Kong openBIM/openGIS Awards 2025 — setting a new benchmark for inclusive, interoperable digital delivery.

Impacts & Benefits

  • Grand Award — Technology Category, Hong Kong openBIM/openGIS Awards 2025

  • Vendor-neutral QAQC platform successfully co-developed and deployed

  • Comprehensive model quality checks delivered across architectural, structural, mechanical, and model hygiene components — no scripting skills required

  • Authoring guidelines developed in collaboration with statutory bodies to eliminate data inconsistency and loss during IFC export

  • BCF integration enabling real-time feedback flow into all major BIM authoring tools

  • Successfully tested across live projects spanning design, coordination, and handover phases

  • SME access to advanced QAQC tools achieved without costly proprietary software or specialist licenses

  • Platform aligned with Hong Kong's Construction 2.0 digital transformation roadmap

Approach

SBI co-developed the openBIM Quality Platform with the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and LeapThought Asia, with a clear mission: to democratize QAQC and make open, interoperable digital delivery achievable for the full spectrum of the construction industry — including the SMEs traditionally excluded by cost and complexity. Built on IFC and BCF open standards, the platform enables well-rounded model quality checks without proprietary licensing, scripting expertise, or vendor lock-in. Authoring guidelines were developed in close collaboration with statutory bodies and working group members to address data inconsistency at the point of IFC export — one of the most persistent challenges in live BIM workflows. A cloud-based BIM viewer federates models and surfaces errors directly in a unified 3D space, while BCF integration ensures feedback loops back seamlessly into authoring tools. The platform has been validated across multiple live projects and phases, and its Grand Award recognition confirms its role as a replicable blueprint for public-private collaboration in Hong Kong's digital construction future.

"Cutting-edge technology can be both accessible and impactful — this platform proves that open standards, combined with public-private collaboration, can drive industry-wide change and uplift all players."
